Tourniquets have had a turbulent history, and have even been at times considered the medical device and hemostatic technique of last resort. Most of the negative studies and adverse commentary around tourniquet usage is based on old battlefield reports dating back to WWI and WWII. However, these negative studies have now proven to be mostly anecdotal, with reported adverse clinical outcomes due to many confounding variables, and not directly attributable to the actual use of a tourniquet.
